Dr Wael ChiriDr Chiri grew up in Perth, where he completed his medical degree at UWA and his post graduate orthopaedic training in our public hospitals. Dr Chiri spent the last year in Adelaide, South Australia where he is only one of three Australian Orthopaedic Surgeons to have completed that particular Hand and Upper Limb Postgraduate Fellowship.

Dr Chiri is passionate about his upper limb specialty which includes treatment of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand and related trauma.

“I enjoy the precise aspect of upper limb surgery and with the introduction of advanced navigation and augmented reality, it is truly a privilege to be part of this emerging field,” said Dr Chiri

“I am excited about bringing innovation to the field including using minimally invasive techniques which has been proven to provide less post-operative pain, smaller scars and allows the patient to return to work or their daily activities faster.

“By matching the right procedure with the right patient you can make a real difference to their life and allow them to return to their activities of daily living and the things that they enjoy, which is hugely rewarding.”

The opportunity to set up a practice at St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital presented after respected Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Michael Edwards retired leaving a gap in the area and an empty consulting suite at the hospital.

“The hospital is in a fantastic location to serve not only those in the inner city but the northern and eastern suburbs, said Dr Chiri.

“Renovations are underway on the large space that will provide a new, inviting, nurturing consulting suite with our growing team that will include a hand therapist, physiotherapist and eventually extend to lower limb specialists.”

Dr Chiri’s experience also extends beyond the patient bedside where he supports the future of orthopaedics and the medical profession. He has published and presented several research papers internationally on topics such as carpal dysplasia, volar rim fractures of the distal radius, supracondylar fractures in children and monteggia forearm injuries.

“I am commencing a teaching role at Curtin University Medical School which is exciting as it is a new medical school and provides an opportunity for me to give back to the profession and pass on my knowledge.”

Dr Chiri is currently consulting from St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital’s sessional suites with a view to commence in his new consulting suites on the site in April. He will also consult at Carine Specialist Centre. Dr Chiri operates at St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital.
