Treatments and therapies

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)

Electroconvulsive therapy is a safe and effective treatment used for several mental health conditions including depression, bipolar disorder and some psychotic disorders, particularly when medications haven’t helped enough or cause difficult side effects.

During ECT, a carefully controlled electrical current briefly stimulates the brain, creating a short seizure that can improve mood and reduce symptoms. Many people notice relief quite quickly. Treatments are usually given about three times a week, with the total course depending on how you respond. In some cases, ongoing sessions may be spaced out over time to help maintain the benefits.

ECT

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)

Transcranial magnetic stimulation is a safe, non-invasive treatment for people with mild to moderate depression, particularly when other treatments haven’t worked well. It uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain that help regulate mood, which can become underactive during depression.

TMS is usually provided alongside other supports such as medication, group or individual therapy to help improve overall wellbeing. A typical course involves about 20–25 sessions. During treatment, one of our trained caregivers monitors you, and you can relax by listening to music, watching a movie, or talking with loved ones. A referral from your GP is required.
