St John of God Richmond Hospital is an internationally recognised private mental health hospital in northwest Sydney providing holistic mental health care services in a setting of beauty and tranquillity.
Following a major $65 million redevelopment in 2024, St John of God Richmond Hospital has expanded to a 112-bed facility that provides comprehensive, accessible and life-changing mental health care.
The development was highly commended at the 2025 European Healthcare Design Awards, celebrating global excellence in environments that promote health and wellbeing. It was also shortlisted for the 2025 INDE.Awards — the Indo-Pacific’s leading architecture and design awards. These recognitions affirm the hospital’s visionary approach to mental health care — creating a healing environment that promotes dignity, connection and holistic wellbeing.
Our hospital has almost 200 caregivers providing treatment and support for a diverse range of mental health and psychiatric disorders, including:
- anxiety and depression
- drug and alcohol addiction
- post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Our committed team of psychiatrists, psychologists, specialised mental health nurses, and other allied health professionals work with you to help you return to a rewarding, fulfilling life.
Private psychiatrists in our Specialist Medical Centre can provide assessments and referrals to our inpatient programs, or to our Counselling and Therapy Centre where we offer a wide range of outpatient and day programs. This provides well rounded support to patients and prepares them for returning home to their families and community.
Research in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
St John of God Richmond Hospital has partnered with universities since 2012 on translational research into trauma and mental health.
Our PTSD research brings together clinical and academic excellence to help determine the best practice and evidence-based care to benefit our clients.
Our research aims to increase awareness of trauma’s impact on mental health, and we advocate for policies that support recovery and provide meaningful assistance to those affected by PTSD.

We contribute toward just and inclusive communities where everyone's dignity is respected and supported. We partner with other organisations because we believe good health involves all aspects of the environment and conditions in which people live and work.

History of St John of God Richmond Hospital
St John of God Richmond Hospital was first established in 1952 by the Brothers of St John of God to provide a safe place for men to receive care for mental illness. The original hospital was in Belmont House, a mansion built in 1892.
In 1951 the Order of St John of God was searching for a suitable property within about an hour’s drive from Sydney to establish a private psychiatric hospital for men. Belmont Park had been placed on the market, but of the original holding of Philip Charley, comprising about 1000 hectares, only 80 hectares remained. Not only was the mansion run-down, but the property overrun with scrub and weeds.
The brothers paid $30,000 and set about renovating the old mansion to accept their first patients. The official opening of St John of God Hospital “Belmont Park” took place on September 21, 1952. Cardinal Sir Norman Gilroy blessed and dedicated the new hospital and said “the foundations for a great hospital for men who are mentally ill had been laid. The blessing of Almighty God had been invoked upon that foundation. From this humble but solid foundation a splendid edifice is destined to rise a work of charity and mercy”.
Historic Belmont House has been preserved and plays an integral role in the new campus, an important operational space for group therapy rooms and meeting rooms.
In November 1975, the hospital opened two new wings and expanded its services in psychiatric care and the treatment of alcohol and drug addictions.
Another wing was opened in January 1991 to provide medical and surgical services. This wing was later used to house the nationally recognised PTSD Unit and is now home to our Medical Centre and Counselling & Therapy Centre. We have a long history of treating service men and women with PTSD since establishing the program in 1994.
The major redevelopment of St John of God Richmond Hospital, completed in 2024, has transformed the hospital into a modern, state of the art mental health care facility. We are now one of Australia’s most renowned private mental health hospitals, providing a safe, structured and supportive place to recover.
