St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital has welcomed its first patients to their new orthopaedic ward.

The level two ward, formerly home to the Family Birthing Unit until its closure in December 2023, has undergone some minor upgrades and a refreshing refurbishment to better serve the needs of orthopaedics patients.

With a total of 20 generously sized rooms, the ward is now perfectly suited for orthopaedic patients who may need extra room for post-operative equipment after procedures like total hip or knee replacements. The considerate design ensures that patients can recuperate comfortably while effectively managing their recovery needs.

Leading the ward is Anna Sanasi, a highly recognised Nurse Unit Manager of the hospital. Anna's wealth of experience and passion for orthopaedics and patient wellbeing will see her leading a dynamic team dedicated to delivering the highest standard of care to orthopaedic patients.

Vanessa Unwin, Chief Executive Officer of St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital said the opening of the ward is another exciting step in the hospital’s future, particularly for orthopaedics.

“Our commitment to establishing orthopaedics as a prominent specialty at St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital is evident through the introduction of our robotics program, which has now grown to encompass three orthopaedic robots,” Vanessa said.

“We have significantly bolstered our team of orthopaedic surgeons, increasing from nine to 22 within a span of eight months and now we have this wonderful specialist orthopaedic ward that I’m sure will be a welcome addition to those looking for orthopaedic care close to home.”
