St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital Acting CEO Emma Cook highlighted that robotic surgery is becoming increasingly prevalent and is now widely requested by both patients and surgeons as the preferred surgical option.
“Our robotics program commenced earlier this year, and based on growing demand for robotic surgery the hospital now has three orthopaedic robots, with the VELYS being our latest investment.”
“Every knee, and every patient requiring a knee replacement procedure is different. The VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution supports surgeons to perform knee replacement surgery tailored to each patient’s unique anatomy.”
The robot, controlled by the surgeon, is designed to provide digital precision to help the surgeon plan and execute a more accurate surgery.
“Robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery is similar to traditional knee replacement surgery but uses technology designed to help surgeons accurately resect bones that align and position the implant relative to the soft-tissue during total knee replacement.”
“There are a number of potential benefits to using this technology for a knee replacement when compared to traditional methods, these can include a greater range of motion, less pain and faster recovery,” she said.
To celebrate the arrival of the VELYS robot, the hospital is giving community members the opportunity to name the device for the chance to win a $100 Crown voucher. For more information about the competition, and to enter, please visit facebook.com/sjogmtlawley
