Volunteer Judy celebrates 10 years at St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital

What area do you volunteer in and what does your role involve?
I currently work in the Family Birth Unit. My role involves making up and posting patient welcome packs, packing away incoming stationary, updating Purple Books, keeping stock of L’Occitane gift packs and adding inserts to the Birth Registration forms.
I initially started volunteering with Mercy Hospital (now St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital) in the gift shop every Tuesday afternoon and would close up at end of day.
From there, I moved to the Day Surgery Unit for a few months before taking on the role in the Family Birthing Unit.
How often do you volunteer with us?
I work for three hours every Wednesday.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I have been married for 52 years and have raised two children and now have five beautiful grandchildren. I started my career in the bank as the first part-time Teller and finished my career as Branch Manager. I retired after 30 years of service.
I am very busy with my grandchildren and love attending all of their activities. I play golf three days a week and keep active with group classes at my local gym. Recently, I’ve started learning to play Mahjong.
Why did you choose to volunteer with us?
I saw a section in the West Australian newspaper on volunteering so decided I would like to give back to the community. I went for an interview and was offered a role at Mercy Hospital.
What do you love or enjoy most about volunteering with us?
I love the comradery amongst all and feeling valued by everyone.
What has been your proudest achievement or moment in volunteering with us?
I had no idea that I had achieved 10 years of volunteering. To be recognised for this service was a very proud moment for me.
What do you want other people to know about volunteering with us?
Consider joining St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital’s volunteering team. You will find them friendly and your service will be very much appreciated. Personally, you will be kept very active and stimulated. I couldn’t recommend it enough.
