Dr Al-Najjar brings a passion for regional health care to the South West

Meet our new vascular surgeon, Dr Mahmoud Al-Najjar, who brings a wealth of experience working in regional communities around Australia to St John of God Bunbury Hospital.

Dr Al-Najjar is taking referrals from GPs and is currently consulting at the St John of God Bunbury Specialist Centre.

Dr Al-Najjar also provides vascular treatments and surgery at St John of God Geraldton Hospital and has previously worked in small towns in northern Queensland with populations of less than 600 people. He has also worked in Indigenous communities. He returned to the city so he could perform high level surgery but his passion for regional communities remained.

Dr Al-Najjar's passion for regional and rural health care shines through in his conversations with patients. He believes in providing the best possible care to his patients in their own local community when possible.

Having worked as a surgeon for 18 years, he is a strong believer in providing patients with all the information they need to make informed decisions about their treatment and surgery.

“I believe in taking the time to see patients and listening to them carefully. You don’t want to rush them,” Dr Al-Najjar said.

“Over my years in medicine I have strived to improve my communication and interpersonal skills so that I can support my patients and understand their concerns.

“I value, understand and respect rural and regional people because of the time I’ve spent working in smaller communities and I enjoy that work.”

Dr Al-Najjar supports doctors in training to work in regional, rural and remote communities, understanding the importance of the unique challenges faced and important skills gained while working in rural health care. He believes in giving back to the community and serves as an instructor in numerous surgical courses, including the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) course conducted by the American College of Surgeons.

While working in Bunbury he has found everyone at the St John of God Bunbury Specialist Centre and St John of God Bunbury Hospital to be very welcoming and supportive.
