Admissions and referrals to St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital
We provide a range of referral pathways for acute, elective, rehabilitation and older adult rehabilitation care.
These are usually arranged by referral to one of our accredited specialists. Use find a specialist to view our admitting specialists.
GPs must be formally accredited to the hospital to admit patients under their care. You will need to provide 24-hour cover for your admitted patients.

We cannot accept patients awaiting placement in residential care or with special care needs such as patients with dementia or confusion.
Our 41-bed Restorative Unit specialises in the assessment and short-term rehabilitation of older public patients to help them regain movement and independence in daily living activities, retain function and reduce deterioration. Care is provided by geriatric consultants and rehabilitation specialists, nurses and an allied health team.
Patient admission criteria
Over 65 years old (Indigenous people with chronic disease and/or complications can be under 65 years old)
reside in the inner suburbs of the East Metropolitan Health Service catchment area, unless from Royal Perth Hospital
low risk of requiring after hours intervention
recent change in functional status
be able to benefit from and participate in multidisciplinary therapy
clear diagnosis and rehabilitation treatment goals, with expectation they will make improvements.
willingness and ability to participate in rehabilitation program and be motivated to achieve goals.
Patients will be accepted for admission if the hospital is able to provide an appropriate service, determined by the admitting consultant, Nurse Unit Manager, rehabilitation assessment nurse and other relevant clinicians.
Exclusion criteria
dementia complications and needs may be better met through psycho-geriatric service
Any medical professional can refer to the Day Therapy Unit including Western Australian public hospitals and general practitioners. Care is provided by geriatric consultants and rehabilitation specialists, nurses and an allied health team.
Our Ursula Frayne Unit provides public inpatient services and recovery-focused care for older adults with mental health challenges. The 12-bed unit has been established to service the inner Perth metropolitan area and is managed by the East Metro Older Adult Mental Health Service.
Private medical services are available with services including medical admission, inpatient consults, and pre-surgical consults upon request. To discuss referrals, call 0434 095 968.

All accredited medical practitioners and service providers are expected to adhere to our code of conduct and practitioner by-laws. These documents govern the relationship between St John of God Health Care and its accredited practitioners, and set expectations for professional conduct, patient safety and the delivery of quality care at our hospitals and services. Practitioners will receive both documents following successful credentialing.
Theatre availability
Theatre session management is governed by the Theatre Efficiency Committee (TEC). The effective management of resources is a very important element of St John of God Health Care’s Mission.
Theatre sessions run on a 4 week rotation and can be found in the annual theatre calendar. Permanent theatre session allocation process is as follows:
