Information for St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital patients

The difficult decision to consider selling Mt Lawley hospital has not been made lightly. However, transitioning the hospital to the State would enable the facility to continue serving the community, while allowing us to focus on the delivery of private health services where private health care demand is strongest.

Over time, Perth’s population has grown and shifted, and that has changed where and how people need care. We’ve seen a reduction in demand for private hospital services in the Mt Lawley area, which is already well served by St John of God Health Care and other private hospitals, while at the same time there is growing demand for private care at our Subiaco, Murdoch and Midland hospitals.

We’re also seeing rapid growth in population across Perth’s eastern corridor which is why St John of God Health Care developing a new Midland Private Hospital – a brand new state of the art standalone private hospital that will support the current and future health care needs of Perth’s eastern suburbs and the wider Wheatbelt region.

If you are staying at the hospital when it transitions on 1 September 2026, please be assured that we are working closely with EMHS to ensure a safe and seamless hospital transfer with no impact on your safety or quality of care.

There should also be no significant changes to your day-to-day experience. Your treatment and care will continue as planned, and hospital services such as meals, allied health services and ward operations will continue to be provided.

Any administrative processes that may be affected by the change in ownership will be carefully managed by our teams, and you will be kept informed if any action is required. Relevant clinical information will be securely shared with EMHS where relevant to support your ongoing treatment, and every effort will be made to ensure continuity of your care throughout your stay.

EMHS advises you don’t need to take any action – your medical record and all relevant information, including specialist referrals, will be transitioned to EMHS in preparation for your next appointment, and wherever possible your doctor or therapist will be the same.

EMHS will issue you your next appointment letter at least 30 days before your next appointment, which will also be available in the Manage My Care app.
