Maternity services at Midland Public

Every birth is unique. Our highly qualified midwives and nurses will support your individual birthing and care needs, while helping you develop the knowledge and skills to care for your new baby.

What we offer

We provide a public maternity service for people living within our catchment area. Our service includes your own patient room and access to a range of services in our hospital.

We do not provide a private maternity service. Our nearby sister hospitals St John of God Subiaco Hospital and St John of God Murdoch Hospital provide high-quality private maternity service.

We do accept non-Medicare patients, however you will be cared for under the public system, and the same conditions will apply. Fees are payable for a range of services as a non-Medicare patient.

Additional services

Our maternity service also includes access to a range of support services for you and your family, including:

  • parent education classes covering pregnancy, birth and early parenthood
  • breastfeeding support including education classes, specialist lactation consultants and home-visit support
  • mental health support through St John of God Raphael Services, which provides free support for parents and families affected by anxiety or depression during pregnancy and in the first few years after childbirth
  • access and referrals to other support services such as paediatric consultants, neonatal unit, physiotherapists, child health nurses, GP liaison, psychological and parenting support services.

Visitor information

Visiting hours are from 11 am to 8 pm daily. Partners may visit from 7 am to 8 pm.

Please note that up to 2 visitors are allowed in the birthing suite at one time and children are not permitted. If you are visiting the Special Care Nursery please speak to a midwife about visitor restrictions.

Maternity bypass

Western Australia’s metropolitan public hospitals use a process called maternity bypass when a hospital experiences unusually high demand and cannot safely accept more women into their maternity care. When this happens, you may be directed to another maternity hospital.

Maternity bypass is activated with the safety of women and babies as the highest priority, in consultation with the WA Health Department’s State Health Operations Centre. If your care needs to be transferred, planning will take place with you, your support people, your caregivers at St John of God Midland Public Hospital, and the receiving hospital.

You will only be transferred if it is considered safe to do so.

What happens if maternity bypass is activated

  • Call the midwife at St John of God Midland Public Hospital as discussed during your antenatal appointments.
  • If maternity bypass is active, you may be advised to attend a different maternity hospital that can best support your needs.
  • Once a receiving hospital accepts your care, our midwife will tell you where to go and provide contact details for the new site you will attend.
  • Your medical records will be sent to the receiving hospital. Please take your pregnancy handheld records with you.
  • If you are already admitted, you will be transferred by ambulance at no cost to you.
  • If you are at home, and it is safe, you may be advised to make your own way to the receiving hospital.

After the bypass period

We will remain in contact with the receiving hospital and, when capacity allows, discuss whether you would like to return to our care.

Our midwives will continue to provide follow‑up care after your baby is born, ensuring continuity and support.
