Our cancer caregivers will celebrate Cancer Nurses Day on Thursday 15 August and throughout the week.

Cancer Nurses Day is "our chance to shed light on the incredible work being done by the 7,500 cancer nurses nationwide and champion their remarkable contributions to improve patient outcomes in Australia." - Cancer Nurses Society of Australia

The theme for 2024 is ‘Strong, Skilled, Specialised’.

Our St John of God Bunbury Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Centre (CCC) nurses have organised a beautiful display and have invited caregivers to recognise the day.

We asked Clinical Nurse Jane Collis why she is so dedicated to working with patients in our Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

"My time in oncology has been incredibly fulfilling, and I am passionate about continuing to provide specialised care to our patients," Jane said.

Jane has been working with St John of God Health Care for eight and a half years. She started her nursing graduate program here, working on the wards for two years before starting with CCC.

"I would say that specialising in oncology is an incredibly rewarding career path. It offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on patients' lives during some of their most challenging times.”

Jane encourages other caregivers thinking about working in oncology to work on an acute ward first.

"In oncology, understanding the interplay between cancer and other health conditions is crucial for delivering effective and compassionate care.

"By starting with broader clinical experience, you'll be better prepared to handle the complexities of oncology nursing and contribute more effectively to your patients’ overall well-being,” she said.

Jane says working with a team of remarkable caregivers is what makes the Comprehensive Cancer Centre so special.

"Each member brings their own distinct personality and expertise, creating a dynamic and supportive work environment. What unites us is our shared passion for cancer nursing and our commitment to providing the best possible patient experience."
