Marcos shared his story with us for Palliative Care Week.
Marcos explained that he chose to work in palliative care because of his empathy and compassion for others.
“As a palliative care nurse I wanted to provide people with the best care they could have, through empathy and compassion, at one of the most vulnerable and challenging times of their lives,” he said.
“Being in a palliative care space can be very scary for people but I believe we support our patients by enabling them to trust us and feel safe with us,” Marcos said.
“When they know they can rely on us they feel safe and comfortable."
Marcos explained that for patients and their loved ones it can be a relief to know they have that support and genuine care around them during what can be a very difficult time.
Marcos, who is originally from Brazil, said he decided to work in palliative care because of his personality - emphatic, kind and caring.
He said a family experience, with his aunty passing away, showed him death doesn’t have to be scary and gave him further motivation to work in palliative care.
He explained that the end of life care can be a positive experience and a very different experience to what most people may think it is.
