Developed by the Cognitive Institute, the program empowers caregivers to communicate their concerns about safety. By doing so, the program aims to prevent unintended harm to caregivers and patients.

Speaking Up For Safety supports an organisational culture where all caregivers can feel confident to speak up respectfully and effectively about safety issues. All caregivers at St John of God Bunbury Hospital will receive training which provides a stepped approach and common language they can use when they raise concerns. This communication model is the Cognitive Institute Safety C.O.D.E.TM. (Checks, Options, Demands and Elevates).

Speaking Up for Safety is also aligned with and supports the St John of God Health Care Values of respect, hospitality and excellence. The training highlights the importance of striving for excellence in the care and service provided to patients, families and other caregivers, providing comfort to all and being respectful of and accepting concerns raised.

St John of God Bunbury Hospital Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Williams said, “I am proud that our hospital is among a growing number healthcare organisations actively working to improve the safety and reliability of patient care.”

“Our focus is always on keeping our patients and caregivers safe and this organisation wide framework and training will help us achieve the highest levels of safety and reliability.”
