Neonatal special care

Some newborn babies require extra medical support in the early days or weeks after birth. This may be because they were born prematurely or are unwell and need specialised care in a dedicated neonatal special care unit or nursery.

Our experienced and highly trained caregivers provide expert newborn care with the goal of helping your baby grow stronger and well enough to go home.

Common reasons a baby may need neonatal special care

Babies may be admitted to the neonatal unit for a range of reasons, including:

  • Premature birth (born before 37 weeks' gestation)
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Infection
  • Trouble with regulating temperature
  • Jaundice
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)
  • Need for surgery
  • Congenital conditions

Caring for your baby

Your baby’s care is delivered by a skilled and compassionate multidisciplinary team, working together to support their health and development.

This team may include:

  • Consultant paediatricians, who review your baby daily and consult with other specialists as needed.
  • Highly trained neonatal nurses, with expertise in caring for newborns requiring specialised support.
  • Allied health caregivers as required
  • Additional neonatal caregivers including ward clerks and pastoral care providers

Most importantly, you are a central part of your baby’s care team! Our nurses and doctors are here to support you, answer your questions and provide reassurance throughout your baby’s stay.
