The hours, days and weeks following your baby’s birth are a special time filled with new emotions, experiences and moments of connection. Whether you are a first-time parent or growing your family, every journey is unique, just like every baby. We will be with you every step of the way to provide compassionate newborn care and parenting support.
The first 24 hours
Following birth, you and your baby will be transferred to one of our postnatal care wards as soon as possible.
Our postnatal wards are designed to provide comfort, privacy and support. All patients are accommodated in private rooms, with larger rooms available for families welcoming multiple babies. Partners are welcome at all times, including overnight stays, allowing them to be actively involved in caring for your newborn and sharing in these precious first days. Visiting hours for other guests may vary.
Each room is fully equipped with an ensuite bathroom, telephone, television, a comfortable chair for breastfeeding and dedicated baby care facilities.
During the first 24 hours, your wellbeing will be closely monitored including regular checks of your pulse, blood pressure, temperature and any blood loss. Your baby will also receive frequent observations to ensure they are healthy and adjusting well.
If your baby requires additional care, for example, if they are born prematurely or need extra medical support, they may be admitted to one of our neonatal units or special care nurseries. In more complex cases, we will ensure your baby is safely transferred to a hospital with a higher level of neonatal care.
Hospital maternity care support
Throughout your stay, our experienced midwives and nursing caregivers will provide practical support and guidance across all aspects of newborn care including bathing, cord care, feeding and settling techniques. Care is personalised to meet the needs of you and your family.
Parent education sessions are also available on the ward, helping to build your knowledge and confidence.
You and your baby will continue to receive regular medical reviews from a dedicated care team, including midwives, nurses, your obstetrician and your baby’s paediatrician.
A range of additional hospital maternity care support is also available including physiotherapy, lactation support and newborn hearing screening.
Going home
The length of your hospital stay will depend on your individual needs and the health of both you and your baby.
As a guide, if you and your baby are well, you may be able to return home by day 4 following a vaginal birth, or by day 5 after a caesarean birth. If you prefer an earlier discharge, we can support this option and arrange follow-up care, including home visits from a midwife.
Before you leave, you will be provided with a comprehensive information guide to support your transition home. This includes details on community services, parenting support and contact information for your local child health centre, ensuring you feel supported every step of the way.
