St John of God Warrnambool Hospital has introduced Magseed equipment to enhance its specialist breast care services, providing patients with a less invasive approach designed to be a more accurate method for breast lump removal surgery.

The Magseed system replaces the traditional hook wire procedure, which requires x-ray guidance to locate a breast lump. Instead, a small marker is implanted at Lake Imaging radiology services, offering improved precision. Unlike the hook wire, the Magseed marker can be placed well before surgery, giving patients greater convenience and comfort.

Improved patient experience

The new Magseed equipment enables breast lump removal surgery to be performed as a day procedure, allowing patients to recover quickly and be discharged on the same day.

“This technology is a significant step forward in making breast care more comfortable and accessible for our patients,” said St John of God Warrnambool Hospital Director of Clinical Services, Leanne McPherson.

“The Magseed system is not only designed to enhance the accuracy of surgery but also provides a less invasive and more convenient process for those undergoing breast lump removal.”

Community support makes it possible

The purchase of the Magseed equipment was made possible thanks to a generous donation from Midfield Meats International, whose support has brought this advanced treatment to the local community.

“We are deeply grateful to Midfield Meats International for their generous donation,” Ms McPherson said.

“Their support allows us to deliver high quality care right here in Warrnambool, ensuring our patients no longer need to travel elsewhere for this treatment.”
