A young woman inspiring others through her path to independence

Tahlia poses with her certificate at the Geelong Youth Awards

When Tahlia moved into St John of God Horizon House in 2023, she had already experienced a great deal of change and uncertainty in her life. After multiple foster placements and while under child protection guardianship, she was looking for stability and an opportunity to build her future.

During her time at St John of God Horizon House, Tahlia worked hard to develop the skills and confidence needed to live independently and successfully transitioned into her own accommodation and began taking important steps towards achieving her long-term goals.

One of those goals was a career in nursing, which she is now pursuing at university where her own experiences have given her a deep understanding and connection with her patients and clients.

While building her own independence, Tahlia has also made a positive difference in the lives of others. Rather than stepping away from St John of God Horizon House after moving on, she has continued to support young people facing similar challenges to those she experienced herself.

In particular, she took another young person who had lived at the house under her wing, offering encouragement, advice and someone to turn to during difficult times as they navigated their own transition to independence.

Those who know Tahlia describe her as kind, approachable and genuinely caring. She has a natural ability to connect with people and often uses her own experiences to reassure others that challenges can be overcome and goals can be achieved.

Talia’s achievements are a reminder that difficult circumstances do not have to define a person's future. Recently, in recognition of her achievements and the support she provides to others, Tahlia was named a finalist in the Inspiration category of the Geelong Youth Awards. It is a well-deserved acknowledgement of a young person who continues to make a positive impact on those around her.
