St John of God Murdoch Hospital brings a new beat to heart rhythm care
St John of God Murdoch Hospital has become the first private hospital in Western Australia to introduce a new technology for treating atrial fibrillation, a common heart rhythm condition.

Cardiologist Dr Nik Stoyanov successfully performed the hospital's first procedure using the technology, Abbott’s Volt Pulse Field Ablation (PFA) System, bringing one of the newest developments in cardiac rhythm management to Western Australia's private health care sector.
Atrial fibrillation is a common heart rhythm condition in which the heart beats irregularly – increasing the risk of other cardiovascular complications.
Unlike traditional ablation techniques which use heat or extreme cold to treat areas of the heart causing an abnormal rhythm, the Abbott Volt PFA system uses pulse field ablation, delivering targeted electrical pulses to the affected heart tissue. It also provides clinicians with cardiac mapping and procedural guidance during treatment.
Dr Stoyanov said the addition of the Abbott Volt PFA system would give clinicians greater flexibility when tailoring treatment for individual patients.
"It is good to have more options as to the methods, ultimately we will be able to find what is best for the patient’s care especially for the more complex cases," Dr Stoyanov said.
