Leading cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons

Electrophysiology (EP) and catheter ablation

We are proud to provide state-of-the-art technology that allows our highly skilled cardiologists to perform catheter ablation to treat arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation.

The most recent advancement in arrhythmia care has been the introduction of pulsed field ablation to St John of God Geelong Hospital. This catheter ablation system uses rapid, high voltage electrical pulses to disrupt an arrhythmia site and provides greater safety compared with traditional thermal energy sources.

Minimally invasive cardiothoracic surgery

Providing one of Australia’s most advanced minimally invasive cardiac surgery programs, St John of God Geelong Hospital offers robotic-assisted procedures for coronary bypass surgery, valve surgery and cardiac tumours.

A unique feature of this program is robotic-assisted coronary artery bypass grafting. This advanced procedure enables heart bypass surgery without a heart lung machine, by robotically ‘harvesting’ the left internal mammary artery through small ports, followed by multi-vessel coronary bypass. The surgery can be undertaken using a small incision in the chest, avoiding the need to cut the bones of the chest.

This robotic-assisted coronary artery bypass grafting is the first surgery of its kind in Victoria, and one of very few such programs across Australia and New Zealand.

Our broader robotic cardiac surgery program includes:

  • robotic mitral and tricuspid valve repair and replacement
  • robotic aortic valve surgery
  • robotic atrial septal defect repair
  • robotic cardiac tumour surgery

These surgical procedures enable access to minimally invasive options across a wide range of structural heart conditions.

Minimally invasive and robotic approaches to cardiac surgery may reduce surgical trauma, avoid a sternotomy, and support faster recovery.
