Allied health services at Bunbury

St John of God Bunbury Hospital allied health professionals work as a team to help you on your journey to recovery. They may support rehabilitation after surgery, post-injury or provide support for treatment with other illnesses. 

Our team works together with hospital caregivers to provide support and treatment while you are in hospital and recommend outpatient services such as physiotherapy or group classes.

Allied health outpatient services and appointments

We offer physiotherapy and other allied health services so you can continue to focus on your rehabilitation at home. Our allied health professionals will create a personalised plan which will help you recover from surgery or injury to get you back on track.

Many of our outpatient appointments are offered at our St John of God Bunbury Specialist Centre close to the Bunbury CBD, with free parking right outside. Services at this location include:

  • physiotherapy
  • dietetics
  • diabetes education.

Appointments can be made for individuals to have one-on-one sessions or register interest in attending a group class. All classes require an allied health assessment before you can book.

Rehabilitation classes

Our physiotherapy rehabilitation classes provide individual and group exercise classes and education programs. Our classes aim to get you moving in the right way to improve your muscle strength and flexibility, reduce pain and ensure full recovery from surgery or injury.

Cardiac rehabilitation classes

Our cardiac rehabilitation classes are run by a team of allied health professionals and aim to improve recovery after heart surgery. A referral or approval from your cardiologist or cardiac surgeon is required. This is an eight-week program including individualised exercise and weekly education.

Aqua therapy classes at the South West Sports Centre

These classes are conducted in water to take the pressure off joints and lower back and assist with movement.

A physiotherapy assessment prior to starting class can be conducted at the hospital or St John of God Bunbury Specialist Centre.

Please note there is a fee of $6.25 per class to enter the pool, payable to the South West Sports Centre (in addition to the cost of the class, which is paid to St John of God Bunbury Hospital).

Classes: Monday 11:30 am to 12:30 pm

Orthopaedic rehabilitation class

These classes assist individuals with recovery within the first 3-6 months after orthopaedic surgery, including:

  • Hip or knee replacement patients
  • Shoulder repair or replacement patients.

Classes: Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:30 am to 12:30 pm

Cost: Private health rebates may apply, workers compensation / motor vehicle insurance clients may attend with insurer approval and DVA will cover costs for eligible clients with GP referral.

Hip and knee osteoarthritis class

This exercise class is for people with hip and knee osteoarthritis

and is conducted by a physiotherapist. The class aims to build strength and neuromuscular control prior to having hip or knee joint replacement surgery. An assessment with the physio is required prior to attending the class.

The class consists of two one-hour long supervised exercise sessions per week for six weeks. There is also an education component which addresses managing osteoarthritis and information about your upcoming hospital admission.

Classes: Tuesday and Thursday, 9:30 am to 10:30 am

Cost: Private health rebates may apply, DVA covers costs for clients with GP referral, and workers compensation or motor vehicle insurance clients can attend with the insurer’s approval.

Mums and bubs aqua therapy classes

Aqua classes are perfect for safe exercising before and after pregnancy. The buoyancy of the water helps take pressure off the back and lower limbs to improve muscle strength and endurance.

Suitability:

  • Mums and bubs is suitable for babies from 12 weeks of age up to 12 months of age.
  • A support person may be required to care for baby while Mum is doing an exercise session.

An assessment with our physiotherapists is required prior to starting the classes. These are done at St John of God Bunbury Specialist Centre.

Balance class

Balance class is a group class that aims to improve balance, strength and mobility. Attendance may assist in preventing falls and harm from falls

Classes are conducted by a St John of God Bunbury Hospital physiotherapist and require an assessment prior to starting and every 12 months after.

Who is the class for?

  • People who are afraid of falling or have had previous falls.
  • People with poor balance.
  • People who have difficulty walking or rely on walking aids.
  • People who want to maintain or improve muscle strength.

When:  Wednesdays 10:30 am to 11:30 am or 11:30 am to 12:30 pm

Cost: Private health rebates may apply, DVA covers costs for clients with GP referral.

Antenatal aqua therapy at the South West Sports Centre

These classes are designed to provide gentle exercise to pregnant mums from 12 to 38 weeks gestation. The classes are run by a physiotherapist and focus on mobility, pelvic floor function and maintaining strength throughout pregnancy.

Postnatal pilates classes

If you have recently had a baby our postnatal pilates classes may help you regain strength, including pelvic floor strength confidence after birth in a safe and friendly class environment. You are welcome to bring your baby to the classes.

The classes are led by a pelvic health physiotherapist.

An assessment by a physiotherapist is required prior to starting the classes.
