A decade of surgical education: Celebrating 10 years of the Midland mock exam
For the tenth year members of the General Surgery Department at St John of God Midland Public Hospital successfully delivered the Midland mock exam in general surgery, providing an invaluable learning experience for surgical trainees preparing to sit the fellowship examination in general surgery.
Designed to closely replicate the structure, expectations and pressure of the fellowship examination, the mock exam provides candidates with a realistic, high-quality environment in which to test their knowledge, clinical judgement and ability to perform under examination conditions. Candidates rotate through a series of viva stations assessing clinical decision-making and surgical knowledge, before receiving dedicated feedback from examiners to help guide their ongoing preparation.
The day brought together surgical consultants from across Perth, who generously volunteered their time and expertise as examiners.
Among them were former Midland mock exam candidates who have since successfully passed their fellowship examination and returned to contribute as examiners themselves.
Their continued involvement reflects the strong culture of collegiality within Western Australia’s surgical community, with those who once benefited from the experience now sharing their knowledge and expertise with the next generation of candidates.
