Foundation Day 2026

“Serve one another humbly in love.” Galatians 5:13

More than a century ago, a newspaper reporter observed something remarkable about the Sisters of St John of God caring for patients in Western Australia:

“Free Ward patients are not separated from other patients, and are nursed and cared for exactly the same as others. No one knows their circumstances.”

At a time when social status often influenced the way people were treated, the Sisters saw something different. They saw the inherent dignity of every person, and that simple conviction shaped the way they cared for and served others.

Today, that same belief remains at the heart of St John of God Health Care.

Our founding story

The story of the Sisters of St John of God began in Wexford, Ireland, on 7 October 1871, when a group of women dedicated themselves to caring for people who were sick, poor and vulnerable.

Their mission eventually brought them to Australia, where they established hospitals and services to meet the needs of growing communities. Guided by compassion, respect and a commitment to serving all people, they cared for those most in need and created a legacy that would span generations.

Today, while the Sisters are no longer responsible for the day-to-day operation of our hospitals and services, their Mission and Values continue to guide our organisation.

A legacy that lives on

The 2026 Foundation Day theme, Nurturing dignity. Every person, every moment, reflects a principle that has guided the Sisters for more than 150 years.

Dignity is not expressed only through major achievements or significant milestones. It is reflected in everyday interactions and moments of care. It is taking the time to listen, offering reassurance during difficult times, and ensuring every person feels seen, heard and respected.

These actions may seem small, but they can have a lasting impact on the people we serve.

Continuing the Mission

Much has changed since the Sisters first began their ministry in Ireland. Health care has evolved, communities have grown, and the organisation has expanded across Australia and New Zealand.

Yet the heart of the Mission remains unchanged. Every day, our caregivers continue a story that began in Wexford many decades ago. Through compassionate care, professional excellence and service to others, they carry forward the legacy of the Sisters of St John of God and help ensure that dignity remains at the centre of everything we do.

As we celebrate Foundation Day, we honour the Sisters whose vision established this Mission and recognise all those who continue to bring it to life today.
