St John of God Murdoch Hospital private Emergency Department opening hours change
At the commencement of Spring, from Tuesday 1 September 2026, St John of God Murdoch Hospital’s private Emergency Department will be open 8am to 10pm, seven days per week, replacing its current 24-hour service.
St John of God Murdoch Hospital CEO Ben Irish said the change was being made to ensure the continued delivery of safe, high-quality care for patients in the face of an ongoing challenge of emergency physician availability.
“Patient safety remains our highest priority. Reducing our opening hours will ensure we can safely staff our emergency department with appropriately qualified emergency doctors during the period of highest patient demand,” Mr Irish said.
“Workforce pressures affecting emergency medicine are being experienced by hospitals across Australia. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts the ongoing challenge of suitably qualified and available emergency physicians has made sustaining a 24-hour roster in our emergency department impossible.”
“We remain committed to providing private emergency care for our community and supporting patients to access care when they need it most,” he said.
Mr Irish apologised for the reduction of hours and said that the hospital was focused on ensuring the community was aware of the reduced hours.
“We have notified St John WA and we are working closely with our hospital staff, doctors and industry colleagues, to support a smooth transition.”
There will be no impact on permanent staff numbers in our emergency department as part of this change.
Outside of opening hours the closest 24/7 emergency department is located nearby at Fiona Stanley Hospital, across the road from our hospital.
