Birthday wish comes true after Murdoch team helps veteran secure a home

Thanks to the dedication of the St John of God Murdoch Hospital Social Work team, that birthday wish has come true. Donny has secured an independent living unit with RAAFA in South Perth, just in time to celebrate his milestone birthday on Monday.

Donny has been in and out of hospital throughout the year, working closely with the Murdoch team during each admission to secure stable, long-term housing.

“It hasn’t been easy – it’s been a real struggle,” Donny said.

“There were a lot of emails back and forth. But this time, I felt a shift. Something had to shift, and it did.”

“All I kept saying was I don’t want to be 60 and not have a permanent place to stay.”

St John of God Murdoch Social Worker Emily said Donny's determination played a significant role in achieving the outcome.

“This was Donny’s fifth admission this year. He has been unable to manage his condition while living on the streets, so it was really important to all of us that he got a secure place to live,” she said.

“Donny has been a wonderful self-advocate throughout this whole process. We just facilitated getting the right people in the room for him to put his case forward and achieve the successful outcome he deserves.”

“The whole care team was so excited when he received the confirmation.”

For Donny, receiving the news marked the end of a long and difficult journey.

“Knowing I have somewhere will help me to maintain a healthy lifestyle, physically, emotionally, and mentally,” he said.

“It also means I have a place to show my son when he visits in August.”

“I really appreciate everyone in the hospital who have cared for me - social workers, nurses, cleaners, cooks, everyone.”

“I also encourage others in the same situation to speak up. Keep fighting, that’s why I’m still standing.”
