Families come in many different shapes and sizes, and what matters most is that children are raised in an environment where they feel loved, safe, supported and valued.

A rainbow family is a family where one or more parents or carers identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer or another diverse sexuality or gender identity. Rainbow families may include two mums, two dads, trans or gender-diverse parents, single parents, blended families, co-parents and many other family structures.

While every family has its own unique experiences, LGBTIQ+ parents and their children can face challenges that other families may not. Discrimination, stigma, social exclusion and a lack of understanding can sometimes make accessing healthcare, education, community services and other forms of support more difficult.

Creating inclusive and welcoming environments can make a meaningful difference.

Supporting rainbow families

Feeling connected and accepted is important for the wellbeing of children and parents alike. Research and resources from organisations such as Raising Children Network highlight the importance of helping LGBTIQ+ families feel that they belong and are respected in their communities.

Inclusive language and everyday actions can help families feel welcome. This might include using terms such as “parent” or “carer” rather than assuming that every child has a mum and dad, recognising different family structures and activities, and making sure forms, events and services reflect the diversity of families.

These small changes can help children understand that there is no single definition of what a family looks like.

Rainbow Families also provides resources designed specifically for LGBTQ+ parents, carers and children. Its resources cover areas including the early years, feeding, postnatal wellbeing, schools, relationships, family diversity and supporting children and young people.

Support for children in rainbow families

Children in rainbow families may sometimes have questions about their family or experience comments, exclusion or bullying because their family looks different from others.

Having opportunities to connect with other children and young people from rainbow families can help to create a sense of belonging. Rainbow Families provides resources and programs that give children and young people opportunities to share experiences, connect with peers and access information about navigating some of the challenges they may encounter.

Parents and carers can also help by talking openly with children about family diversity and reinforcing that families can look different, while sharing the same foundations of love, care and connection.

Inclusive healthcare and support

Every family deserves to feel safe, respected and understood when accessing healthcare and support services. The Australian Government’s National Action Plan for the Health and Wellbeing of LGBTIQA+ People 2025–2035 recognises the importance of inclusive, safe and accessible healthcare and the barriers that discrimination and stigma can create.

For rainbow families, finding healthcare professionals and services that understand and respect their family structures can be an important part of feeling comfortable seeking support.

Knowing where to find reliable information and support can help parents and carers feel more confident as they navigate pregnancy, birth, parenting and family life. Building connections with other rainbow families can also provide an important sense of community and reassurance.

Finding support for your rainbow family

No two families are exactly alike, and there is no single way to be a parent. Rainbow families deserve the same opportunity as every family to feel supported, included and celebrated.

Whether you are preparing to become a parent, navigating pregnancy and birth, raising children, supporting teenagers, there are organisations and resources available to help.

Rainbow Families is an Australian organisation supporting, connecting, celebrating, empowering and advocating for LGBTQ+ parents and their families. It provides family resources, community programs, events and support for parents, carers, children and young people.

You can also find information about LGBTIQ+ families and family diversity through the Raising Children Network, including practical advice about supporting rainbow families and creating inclusive communities.
