Alasdair Sutherland trained in orthopaedics in Scotland, including a research doctorate (MD Hons), before doing specialist fellowships in trauma, joint replacement and sports orthopaedics in Melbourne and Turin (Italy).


He worked as an orthopaedic specialist, Senior Lecturer and Director of Orthopaedic Training in Aberdeen over seven years from 2003.


In 2008 he was awarded the prestigious American-British-Canadian (ABC) travelling fellowship.


He moved to Warrnambool in 2010 to become Associate Professor at the new Deakin University Medical School and Director of Orthopaedic Services at South West Healthcare. He is a member of the Orthopaedic Court of Examiners of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and past Examiner of the Intercollegiate Board for Orthopaedics in the UK.



Alasdair’s clinical practice is in general orthopaedics and trauma with a focus upon knee surgery, particularly knee ligament reconstruction, arthroscopic surgery and joint replacement of knee as well as hip replacement. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles and remains research active, with collaborative projects on public health, patient outcomes and basic science ongoing.
