Dr David Sousa is an Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon.



Dr Sousa graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon in 2013. He completed his Ophthalmology specialty training in Portugal, followed by Vitreoretinal fellowships in Manchester, United Kingdom and Melbourne, Australia.


Dr Sousa currently works as a Vitreoretinal Surgeon at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, in Melbourne and consults at St John of God Geelong Hospital on a regular basis.


He is also involved in multiple research projects at Centre for Eye Research Australia, including retinal imaging, artificial intelligence and innovative surgical devices.


Dr Sousa has authored numerous peer-reviewed research publications and is a regular speaker at national and international conferences. He obtained his PhD degree (Hons.) in April, 2021, and continues to lecture in his alma mater, the University of Lisbon.


Dr Sousa specialises in the treatment of cataract, retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, diabetes-related eye disease and age-related macular degeneration.
