Dr Janes trained in orthopaedic surgery in the United Kingdom and in Perth. He achieved his orthopaedic fellowship in 1994. He then completed a fellowship in upper limb surgery with Dr Hales and Honey in upper limb surgery.


Dr Janes has been the WA representative to the Board of the Australian Orthopaedic Association and is the current Chair for the WA branch. He was a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery for 10 years.
