Dr Finsterwald fell in love with the Perth lifestyle while studying at Milner International College in 2005. He grew up near Zürich, Switzerland, where he graduated medical school in 2011 before completing his training in orthopaedic and trauma surgery with honours in 2017. After working as a consultant surgeon in lower limb sports and arthroplasty surgery Dr Finsterwald and his family moved to Perth in 2019 to seek new challenges.

Over the subsequent three years Dr Finsterwald undertook extensive Australian subspecialty training including the following Fellowships:

• hip and Knee Replacement (The Joint Studio)

• the Perth Sports Surgery Fellowship with A/Prof Peter D’Alessandro and colleagues focusing on arthroscopic knee reconstructive and preservation surgery

• the Primary and Revision Hip and Knee Arthroplasty Fellowship with Prof Piers Yates and A/Prof Chris Jones

• two Trauma Fellowships at Fiona Stanley Hospital and Royal Perth Hospital.

• Following this broad Western Australian experience he was appointed as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Rockingham General Hospital and Fiona Stanley Hospital, and continues to work alongside his previous mentors – now counting them as colleagues.

• Dr Finsterwald has achieved specialist recognition in Australia, and successfully completed the Australian Fellowship Exams. He is an active Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and Australian Orthopaedic Association (FAOrthA).

• Dr Finsterwald is fluent in English, German, Swiss German and some French.

• Dr Finsterwald is proud to be actively involved in teaching the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons and has published and presented research locally and internationally through the University of Western Australia and Orthopaedic Research Foundation of Western Australia.
