Dr Garry Barron is an interventional and general cardiologist. Originally a New Zealand graduate; he obtained his Part 1 FRACS but fate led lead to a career change. He moved to Melbourne in 1996 to finish his training. Garry was the inaugural Fellow in Interventional Cardiology at Monash Medical Centre for a period of two years.

Garry’s interests are in general cardiology and particularly coronary interventions. He was an early adopter of the trans-radial approach and image guided or precision angioplasty. He was the head of the cath lab at Dandenong Hospital and director of cardiology at The Valley Private/Mulgrave Private for many years.

He had active involvement in interventional clinical research during his appointment at Monash Medical Centre/Monash Health. He has been involved in the training of many cardiology registrars and interventional fellows.

Garry had been managing the cardiological care of patients with general practitioners in the South East of Melbourne until March 2023, a period of 26 years. With the move from Monash Medical Centre to the Victorian Heart Hospital in February it was time for a sea change. After doing a locum in Bunbury in 2019 the seed was sown. The love of the area and the challenges of working in a regional centre were the attraction.

His inspiration is the feedback from his trainees and patients.

He is married with two children. His interests outside of medicine include travel, aviation, food and wine.
