One nurse. One idea. Over $1 million raised.
Back in 2014, St John of God Murdoch Hospital nurse Suzanne Philpot brought together a small group of orthopaedic colleagues to take on a 200km fundraising ride for cancer research.

Since then, her passion and leadership have grown the Ortho Sistas into a team of more than 30 riders that include family, friends, supporters and nurses from across Perth.
This year, the team celebrates an extraordinary milestone: a cumulative fundraising total of over $1 million for cancer research at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research.
“I wanted to do something to give back to others and helping raise funds for cancer research seemed like a good cause for the benefit of all,” Suzanne said.
“I first rode in 2013 and thought how much better it would be to gather others together to join this amazing cause.”
“Ten days before the ride I heard the news my dad had stage IV melanoma. This made the cause all the more important.”
Over the past 12 years, the Ortho Sistas have relied on traditional fundraising to reach their goal — hosting high teas, curry nights, quiz nights, sausage sizzles and raffles, all made possible through generous local business support and strong community involvement. This milestone is a testament to the power of connection and kindness.
“We couldn’t have done it without the incredible support of our families, friends, and donations from local small businesses within the community,” Suzanne said.
The Ortho Sistas participated in the 2025 MACA Cancer 200 Ride for Perkins on 4-5 October, and the team welcomes anyone who would like to get involved.
“We are a team not only of nurses, but have members from all walks of life, all with the same strong passion to make a difference to cancer research. Everyone has a story to tell.”
“Get on board, join our team, maybe as a rider, or maybe as a supporter/fundraiser. It’s a team effort and we can't do it alone, we need our huge family of supporters.”
