The most popular names for baby girls born at our maternity hospitals across Australia have been revealed with some surprise new entries.

After welcoming more than 11,000 babies across our hospitals in 2023, we can reveal that for the second year in a row, Olivia has topped our most popular list.

In surprise news, Isla which falls in the top 10 of registered births in Western Australia, Victoria and New South Wales again finished outside of the St John of God Health Care most popular list.

Here are the St John of God Health Care top 10 girls’ names for 2023

1. Olivia

(Meaning olive tree; peace.)

Ranked first in 2022. Olivia continues to be a popular name for St John of God Health Care babies, coming in at either number one or two over the last five years. 

2. Mia

(Meaning moon.)

Makes a welcome return to the top 10 after taking a two year break.

3. Sophia

(Meaning wisdom.)

Jumps six spots from number nine in 2022.

4. Charlotte

(Meaning free man.)

A female variation of the French male name Charles, Charlotte continues to hold its spot in the top five over the last five years although down two spots from 2022.

5. Amelia

(Meaning industrious, striving; work.)

Continues to see a surge in popularity, up one spot from 2022.

6. Lily

(Meaning Lily flower; pure.)

Number 10 in 2022…up four spots in 2023, this little flower is starting to bloom.

7. Sophie

(Meaning wisdom.)

A diminutive of Sophia, Sophie makes a comeback to this list in 2023 after missing out in 2022.

8. Ella

(Meaning fairy maiden; goddess.)

Four years in a row in the top 10 but down four spots from number seven in 2022.

9. Florence

(Meaning blossoming, flourishing, prosperous.)

Welcome to the list. Flourishing Florence is a brand new entry in 2023.

10. Matilda

(Meaning mighty in battle.)

Mighty warrior Matilda is making a comeback and is back in the top 10 for the first time since 2020.
