Seeing a world without glasses or contact lenses

Over the past 20 years there have been advancements in procedures that allow people to be free from wearing glasses or contact lenses. This may be for better vision, aesthetics or to eliminate the encumbrance of spectacles or contact lenses. Dr Farokh Irani explains more.

We now have a new generation of lenses that are implanted into the eye.

The implantation process is via a painless 10-minute procedure, all done under a local anesthetic with no needles.

The eye sees better immediately. There are no stitches to remove afterwards and recovery is extremely rapid. The lenses sit inside the eye and last forever. Neither maintenance nor replacement is ever needed. It is a “do once and forget “ experience.

This procedure allows clear focused vision at all distances ofviewing- far work like driving, TV; intermediate distance like computer use; near vision use like reading etc.

The need for glasses is either entirely eliminated or severely reduced to needing them maybe five per cent of the time.

There is a huge cost saving in not needing to buy glasses over a lifetime and the vision is more natural. It is also a great boom for sporting and other hobbies and certain occupations.

Recently, there has been a move by baby boomers to get rid of their need for close vision or “reading glasses”.

For most people, glasses are not needed until they reach their late 40s or early 50s.

Thereafter, the need for glasses increases over their lifetime, initially for near vision and then for far vision (driving, TV, socialising).

Then, to get rid of their spectacles and still have fantastic youthful vision is like “turning back the clock”.

I have been doing this procedure for 20 years and have done about 15,000 eye operations—both locally and overseas.

An experienced surgeon is vital in ensuring success. A very careful appraisal of the potential client is needed, meticulous attention to calculating the type and nature of the lens implant, and above all, very skilled and careful surgery.

I have completed the procedure for people from all walks of life and backgrounds including well known celebrities, politicians and business executives. Typical ages are from 35 to 85. The results have been fantastic and the overwhelming feedback from the experience is extremely positive and joyful.
