Code of Conduct
St John of God Hospital seeks to cultivate the highest possible
level of collegiality and co-operation amongst all caregivers,
including accredited practitioners.
This Code of Conduct is introduced for all
accredited practitioners following endorsement by the Medical
Advisory Committee. Accredited practitioners will be protected
under this code and will be supported by St John of God if
reporting breaches of the code.
All caregivers at St John of God are
required to comply with policies appropriate to these
areas. All accredited practitioners are specifically expected
to comply with St John of God Health Care By-laws for Medical and
Dental Practitioners.
Section 6.4 in the By-laws sets our expected
standards of personal and professional behaviour. This document is
to be read in conjunction with these by-laws. In addition to the
existing by-laws, a series of Sentinel Behaviour Events have been
developed.
Sentinel behaviour events
Sentinel Behaviour Events have been defined
as, but are not limited to:
- Threatening, humiliating or intimidating
behaviour
- Physical violence including throwing of
instruments, charts or other objects
- Insensitive jokes and pranks, particularly of
a racial nature
- Inappropriate behaviour of a sexual nature,
including unwelcome advances, jokes, comments on appearance, body
contact or display of offensive materials
- Inappropriately criticising health care
professionals in front of others
- Unethical or dishonest behaviour
- Difficulty working collaboratively with
others
- Repeated failure to respond to calls
- Inappropriate arguments with patients,
patient’s family, caregivers, other accredited practitioners or
service providers
- Resistance to recommended corrective
action
- Inappropriate dress and/or standard of
personal hygiene.
Procedure
Reports of Sentinel Behaviour Events involving
accredited practitioners should be directed to either the Director
of Medical Services or Chief Executive Officer.
The practitioner involved will be given an
opportunity to respond to any report of misconduct. If the matter
is considered serious enough in the judgement of either the Chief
Executive Officer or Director of Medical Services, the matter will
be referred to the Credentials Committee for consideration.
Breaches of the Code of Conduct may result in
removal of accreditation for the practitioner. In any case where
the accredited practitioner may be subject to removal of clinical
privileges, an appeal process will be available.
