Clinical Nurse Consultant Sonia Herrera explains how the St John of God Burwood Hospital's inpatient and outpatient program can help people recover from addictive behaviours including drug and alcohol, and gambling addiction.

Our addiction program is separated into two components – a three-week inpatient program and a subsequent 12-week outpatient course.

We recommend you complete both components so you have the greatest chance of achieving your recovery goals, however you can just complete the inpatient component and experience success.

We are focused on looking after all aspects of your wellbeing and ensuring you have a successful and comfortable stay. We work closely with you and encourage your family to participate at your discretion.

Recovery is step-by-step

Our care puts you at the core of all decision making and we guide you through your recovery to give you the best chance of achieving your recovery goals.

Our alcohol, substance use and addictive behaviours recovery program uses evidence-based best practice which is translated into a manual that is regularly updated to ensure you receive the most up to date care.

The manual forms a step-by-step guide which combines education, self-directed worksheets and practical strategies to support you.

Our three-week inpatient program involves:

  • Detox, if required
  • Acute stabilisation
  • Education
  • Skills practice
  • Community reintegration

We believe you are an individual and tailor our program to support you as you work on your recovery goals. We take into account and treat your medical, psychological, physical, lifestyle and spiritual needs.

Our systematic approach to skills development, enables you to progress in stages to improve your overall functioning. We know that some stages, may not be achieved in the set order. This is OK. We will meet you at your stage of recovery and help you continue moving through the stages to improve your overall functioning.

Your wellness will continue to improve over time as you develop your newfound skills with practice.

Who will care for you?

Our multidisciplinary team provides care for your overall wellbeing. This team includes:

  • Psychiatrists
  • Physicians
  • Nurses
  • Psychologists
  • Social workers
  • Chaplains
  • Dietitians
  • Pharmacists

12-week outpatient program

Your addiction behaviours recovery may continue through our 12-week outpatient program. This program can also be taken independently of the inpatient program.

The outpatient program, completed while you are living in the community, supports and reinforces your skills to help you maintain your wellness at home.

The program focuses on:

  • Facilitating ongoing personal accountability
  • Supporting ongoing rehabilitation
  • Relapse prevention to support you to create a life worth living
  • Developing resilience and managing your life without substance abuse
