Psychologist Janja Bojanic explains why mindfulness is so powerful for wellness.

Mindfulness has been proven to be a powerful tool for developing, maintaining, and enhancing emotional wellness.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a process of bringing a nonjudgmental awareness to the present moment. By implementing this practice you can learn to become less distracted by worrying thoughts and learn to enjoy the present moment.

What are the benefits of mindfulness?

Some of the proven benefits in regular engagement and practice of mindfulness include:

  • reducing rumination (unwanted deep thoughts)
  • reducing stress
  • better at coping with pain
  • assisting with brain growth and organisation (neuroplasticity)
  • improving immune health
  • improved focus and memory.

What mental health disorders can benefit from mindfulness?

Mindfulness can assist a wide range of people, including those who are experiencing mental health conditions (as well as those who are not).

Mindfulness is a strategy implemented by clinicians for a variety of mental health conditions, including, anxiety, and depression, PTSD and substance use disorders.

So how do I practice mindfulness?

There are almost endless ways to practice mindfulness, and some easy daily practices to try can include:

  • mindful breathing strategies
  • mindful eating or drinking
  • mindful walking
  • listening to music
