St John of God Subiaco Hospitals Heart Team will be Up all Night in support of Ronald McDonald House

Two St John of God Subiaco Hospital heart specialists will join one of their patients to raise funds to support families with seriously ill children by participating in this year’s Up all Night walking marathon.

03 March 2022

St John of God Subiaco Hospital Cardiologist Dr Paul Stobie, who will be doing the walk for the third consecutive year, and Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr Jurgen Passage will be joined by patient Roy Barnett - whose heart surgery was performed at St John of God Subiaco Hospital by Dr Passage.St John of God Subiaco Hospital’s Heart Team

Along with 1,314 other participants, the three team members will walk approximately 42 kilometers across Perth from 7.30pm Saturday 12 March, well into the morning.

Mr Barnett, who participated in the walk last year, said that he was recovering well from his heart surgery and was again looking forward to the challenge - this year with a new heart valve and team.

“It is quite amazing that I can even consider undertaking this walk only a few months after surgery. I am incredibly thankful to Jurgen and the cardiac team at St John of God Subiaco Hospital,” he said.

Dr Passage added that Roy’s early recovery proceeded as expected and that he was able to leave hospital less than a week after his surgery.

“To attempt a 42 kilometer walk less than six months after surgery shows Roy’s determination. It also illustrates that patients with heart disease can live a very active life if appropriately treated,” he said.

The team aims to raise $20,000 this year, with funds raised through the event supporting Ronald McDonald House, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing vital accommodation, education and support programs for families with seriously ill children.

Dr Stobie said that in addition to being a lot of fun and a good excuse to keep active, the Up all Night event raised valuable money for a very good cause.

“Thanks to the generosity of the community, the St John of God Subiaco Hospital Heart Team is on track to raise an incredible $20,000 this year,” he said.

“This amount will go a long way in assisting those who are supported by Ronald McDonald House.”
