When St John of God Subiaco Hospital Receptionist Jan Hinchliffe turned 80, she went on the unexpected trip of a lifetime.

Jan was taken on a joy ride by St John of God Subiaco Hospital Oncologist and qualified pilot Dr Andrew Dean in his pride and joy, his Cirrus airplane.

As part of the trip, Dr Dean flew Jan over Perth, then up the coast to Hillarys and back over Rottnest, Carnac and Garden Islands.

Jan said she was very grateful for the once in a lifetime birthday gift and was overwhelmed by Dr Dean’s generosity.

“It was a fantastic day and an amazing experience that I’ll never forget. I’ve already asked Andrew where he’ll be taking me next year when I turn 81," she said.

Dr Dean, who is a self-professed ‘aviation geek’, has been piloting planes for almost 30 years. He flies to and from Geraldton each week to care for oncology patients at St John of God Geraldton Hospital. He has also been known to fly his patients from the rural community to Perth for treatment.

Dr Dean said he has known Jan for many years and was delighted to offer her the unique experience.

“It’s not every day you turn 80, and what better way to celebrate the milestone than a plane trip around your home town,” he said.

“There’s truly nothing better than being up in the skies."
