Held from 24 to 28 March, the ride will see 130 cyclists cover more than 700 kilometres from Albany to Perth, raising vital funds and awareness for the prevention of youth suicide and depression.

Now in its 24th year, the event has raised more than $31 million for Youth Focus, a not-for-profit group which delivers free mental health services to young people aged 12 to 25.

For Dr Stobie, it is his first time taking on the challenge. He has been training for six months, rising at 4.15am three times a week to prepare.

As a cardiologist, Dr Stobie is a strong advocate for lifelong health and fitness. In his 40s, he completed two New York City Marathon events, and more recently has raised close to $60,000 for the Ronald McDonald House Charities through five ‘Up All Night’ walks.

This year, however, he said his focus is firmly on youth mental health, an issue that continues to have a profound impact on families and communities across Australia. Nationally, suicide remains the leading cause of death for Australians aged 15 to 24.

“Waking up at 4.15am isn’t easy, but it’s nothing compared to what many young people and families are facing when dealing with mental health challenges,” he said.

“Supporting initiatives like the Hawaiian Ride for Youth is a natural extension of my passion for community wellbeing.

“As doctors, we see every day how closely physical and mental health are connected, and just how common mental health challenges are. Everyone knows someone who has been impacted, whether it’s a family member, friend, colleague or acquaintance.

“It’s especially important that young people know they’re not alone, that help is available, and that there are people who care deeply about them.”

“I’ve been absolutely amazed by the generosity and support of the community and the difference this will make to those most in need.”

Dr Stobie has already raised almost $60,000 and hopes to surpass that amount.
