The O-arm is a mobile x-ray system, which provides 360 degree, 3D images in real time and can be used at any stage before, during and after spinal surgery.

This enhanced imagery improves surgeons’ visibility of patients’ anatomy, optimising clinical decision making and surgical accuracy, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

St John of God Subiaco Hospital CEO Prof Shirley Bowen said the hospital has been at the forefront of medical innovations for more than a decade.

“We are committed to ensuring our patients are provided the highest quality care and are extremely pleased to offer this device to our patients undergoing spinal surgery,” she said.

“By nature, spinal surgeries can be challenging and complex. However, the O-arm enables surgeons to x-ray patients’ on-demand in theatre, increasing the safety profile of spinal surgery.”

“As the surgery is more precise, patients can experience less pain and a faster recovery, and the risk of a revision surgery is reduced,” Prof Bowen said.
