Companionship volunteers are available to spend time with patients and help with some of life’s simple joys like going for a walk or providing company and encouragement at meal times.
Companionship volunteers also join the patients to listen to their favourite music, complete crosswords and play games.
An activity box has been created for the program and contains a range of puzzles, card games, colouring pencils and fiddle mats for patients to enjoy.
One of the most interesting items in the box is a reminiscent book that includes archived newspaper clippings.
This simple collection of news stories can help bring back memories from times gone by for the patient.
St John of God Subiaco Hospital Manager Allied Health Charlene Grosse said the difference companions are making can already be seen in helping patients feel more comfortable during their stay.
"The team has really got behind this new program and helped in the development," Charlene said.
