National Volunteer Week 2018 ran from 21 to 27 May with this year’s theme “Give a little, change a lot” particularly meaningful to St John of God Subiaco Hospital.

Each year over 120 volunteers at our hospital help organise fundraising activities, assist people to navigate the hospital, make cups of tea, and offer kind words of support to our patients and their families when they are feeling vulnerable.

In the last 12 months among other things our volunteers have:

  • Assisted up to 10,000 visitor enquiries at the McCourt Street entrance
  • Provided 800 books and 1,000 magazines to our patients
  • Provided over 1,000 hours to look after babies in our Parent Education crèche
  • Escorted more than 1,000 anxious parents from the Paediatrics Ward to theatre and then returned them to the recovery area
  • Provided more than 6,000 friendly visits to our cancer patients on Ward 35
  • Toasted up to 12,000 sandwiches and cups of tea/coffee for our Endoscopy patients

Award winning

Congratulations to volunteer Maria Sita who won the WA Volunteer Service Award from the Department of Local Government and Communities.

Maria has volunteered at St John of God Subiaco Hospital for 25 years making a significant contribution to the community keeping patients comfortable and being a good  mentor to new volunteers.

A morning tea was held to thank our volunteers for helping to make a positive difference to our patients, visitors and caregivers.
