Professor Saunders is internationally recognised as one of Australia’s most prominent cancer surgeons. She has contributed to many clinical aspects of breast cancer research, including clinical trials of new treatments and translational research, which puts best evidence-based care into practice.

She is also heavily involved in the strategic planning of Australian cancer services through membership of numerous local and national government committees and advisory councils and consumer organisations.

St John of God Subiaco Hospital Chief Executive Officer Professor Shirley Bowen said Professor Saunders’ work has changed the lives of many Australians with cancer.

“Through her dedication to cancer research Christobel has been at the forefront of emerging and innovative new treatments for women and men diagnosed with breast cancer,” Shirley said.

“This includes her recent work here at Subiaco on the POSITIVE study, which is giving young women with hormone-sensitive breast cancer the opportunity to realise their dream of becoming mothers.”

Professor Bowen said Christobel was a driving force behind a range of community information and education initiatives at the hospital to support women before and after diagnosis of breast cancer.

“Christobel spearheaded our new Wellness After Cancer Clinic, a first for a Western Australian private hospital, which gives our breast cancer patients the support they need post-surgery to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle and optimal wellbeing after treatment.
