Parent education

Our parent education classes at St John of God Murdoch Hospital provide parents with a wide range of support and guidance to help them prepare for the arrival of their new baby.

Our comprehensive parent education services are designed to help you build knowledge and confidence so you can prepare for the differernt stages of pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding and early parenting.

What to expect

Our experienced midwives host the relaxed, informal classes which are designed to provide a safe environment to learn, share and ask questions. Other health professionals may also be available during some classes to provide expert advice on a particular topic.

Maternity ward tours

Maternity ward tours at St John of God Murdoch Hospital are conducted by a midwife every Saturday and Sunday at 2.30pm. The tour takes about 30 minutes and gives you an opportunity to view the facilities.

No appointment is necessary. Please meet in the level one lounge, near the lift.

Murdoch parent education information

All of our parent education classes are held in the hospital auditorium on lower ground floor. Please follow the signs to main hospital, take the north wing lifts to the lower ground floor and follow the signs to auditorium.

Preparation for childbirth

Our Preparation for Childbirth Course is presented by an experienced midwife and is designed for couples having their first child.

It covers vaginal and caesarean birth, settling your baby and breastfeeding. We recommend women who are about 32 weeks pregnant to attend this course.

Cost: You may have an out-of-pocket charge for these parent education classes as not all health funds cover these costs. Your maximum out of pocket charge will be $235 per couple. Please contact your health fund for further information or our Patient Accounts Dept on (08) 9366 1132 in relation to your out-of-pocket expenses. 

Time: This course over four, two-hour evening sessions on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evenings from 7.00pm to 9.00pm. It includes supper and refreshments.

Refresher classes

This complimentary two-hour session reintroduces couples to the major concepts of vaginal and caesarean birth, settling your baby and breastfeeding. It also provides an opportunity to discuss previous childbirth experiences and easy transition for siblings.

Time: Thursday 7.00pm to 9.00pm

Focus on Lifestyle

Our Focus on Lifestyle Class is a free information session covering all aspects of early pregnancy. A midwife, dietitian and physiotherapist are on hand to provide tips and advice.

Time: Thursday 7.00pm to 9.00pm

Breastfeeding and settling - keys to success

Find out the key principles to successful breastfeeding through our Breastfeeding and Settling Class.

With the use of dolls (no body exposure involved) your skills and confidence will increase in preparation for feeding and settling your baby. The topics covered in this class are similar to those addressed during week four of the preparation for childbirth course.

We encourage all couples to attend this session, especially those who have had previous breastfeeding difficulties. Partners are encouraged to attend.

Timetable: 7.00pm to 9.00pm

Fastrak Class

Our one-day Fastrack Class covers everything you need to know about birth and beyond. We recommend women who are 35-weeks pregnant to attend this session.

Time: Saturday, 8.45am to 4.00pm
