Postnatal care

We support you and your newborn baby in your own home.

Heading home from hospital with your newborn is a special occasion.

Being at home with your newborn can take some adjustment and having the right advice and support during the first few days or weeks can make a big difference.

Our experienced midwives and certified lactation consultants can visit you at home to give you the support you need to settle in with your little one at home.

Our postnatal home visits include:

  • advice on general baby health and wellbeing
  • advice on mother health and wellbeing
  • assistance with breastfeeding and lactation
  • general baby health checks, including Guthrie testing.

We work closely with your obstetrician, paediatrician, child health nurse and GP to ensure your baby has the best possible start to life.

How to access in-home postnatal care

Any family can access this service. You do not need a referral from a doctor, and you don’t need to have been a patient at a St John of God Health Care hospital.

Some postnatal care visits may be available free of charge or subsidised by your health insurance - check with your health fund. You can also choose to pay directly per visit.
