Diet on the agenda for early pregnancy

St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital has bolstered the expertise of the popular Preconception and Early Pregnancy Information Sessions by adding a Clinical Dietitian to the event.

The sessions are free and perfect for anyone starting to think about planning a family or who might be in the early stages of pregnancy.

Dietitian Amy Elkin co-hosts the session that is designed to support and inform anyone, even if they haven’t booked to birth at the hospital.

“Some of the biggest questions we are asked by women in the early stages of pregnancy is what they can eat and what supplements they should be taking, said Amy.

“Getting this information early in your pregnancy, or even before you are pregnant, can set you up for a healthy and happy pregnancy and alleviate any anxiety you may have about your diet.

“We share, what you should be eating, healthy weight gain, morning sickness, food avoidance, supplements and some common food risks.”

Partners are welcome to attend the session that is held every six weeks at the hospital’s Conference Centre and also includes information from our midwifery parent education team and an explanation of some of the costs involved in private health care.

The overall program topics includes:

  • Health and wellness
  • Healthy eating in pregnancy
  • You care options and fees
  • Facilities and care teams
  • Your pregnancy – what to expect
  • Ward tour
