Loretta joins the ranks of around 100 others across Australia and explains her motivation to achieve her dream to be a perioperative nurse surgical assistant.

“I have been at the hospital for around nine years, starting here as a graduate nurse,” says Loretta.

“I absolutely love what I do and was keen to undertake advanced nursing practice and my degree will enable me take my career to the next level.

“Most surgical assistants are medically trained and it is at a surgeon’s discretion as to whether they take on a nurse surgical assistant.

“This can include checking all instrumentation to make sure everything goes smoothly.

“Orthopaedics is my favourite surgery – all the plates, screws and drills fascinate me and it is really intense surgery which I love.”

When asked about balancing work, life and study, Loretta credits her husband, her children and her work colleagues for allowing her to follow her dreams.

“I love my job and I love the team I work with,” she says.

“I wanted to show my four girls, who are aged between 10 and 20, that if you want something, you need to grab every opportunity to succeed with both hands.

“My husband has been instrumental in my study and work regime as he supports myself and the girls – he has given me the opportunity to take this on board.”

We congratulate Loretta on her dedication to her study and her work at our hospital.
