“I graduated in 2015 from Curtin University and applied for the ‘Perioperative Intensive Transition (PIT)’ program.

“This program is a way for graduates to work in metropolitan hospitals to gain the experience and qualifications to work in a perioperative – or surgical – environment,” says Loren.

“I was successful in applying for this program and was placed at St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital.  Once I had completed the program, I was employed by the hospital.

“At the end of last year, I was asked if I wanted to do a Graduate Diploma in Perioperative Nursing at Notre Dame University, which I started in Feburary.  The diploma is recognised around the world.

“I always wanted to work in the perioperative area. It is a challenging role as you need good time management skills and knowledge of the equipment and what is needed during each operation.

“It is important to have a good background knowledge of the different specialties and I am hoping in the future to do a Masters in Perioperative Nursing,” said Loren.

Oliver Brennan, Nurse Unit Manager Perioperative Services, says Loren’s enthusiasm to learn is a credit to her.

“Loren has achieved some great things, having come from the PIT program, which is a great entry into Perioperative nursing.  She has worked hard to develop her skills,” said Oliver.

We acknowledge Loren’s efforts in the lead-up to International Nurses Day on Friday 12 May.
