St John of God Midland Public Private Hospitals 5th birthday celebration

St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospital’s Chief Executive Officer Michael Hogan said over the past five years the hospital has developed a range of initiatives and services to provide high quality care to people living in the East Metropolitan and surrounding Wheatbelt.

“When you look at the numbers of how many people have been treated at the hospital over the past five years, it really demonstrates the depth and range of services we are providing to the local community,” Mr Hogan said.

The public hospital’s figures over the past five years include:

  • 356,847 Emergency Department presentations

  • 497,617 public patient bed days

  • 443,266 public outpatient appointments

  • 8,915 births

  • 49,690 public procedures

  • 172,195 public patient admissions

  • 8,805 mental health admissions

  • 2 million patient meals served

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to the hospital in its fifth year of operation. In addition to providing high quality care to COVID patients and rapidly changing processes to minimise the disruption to most services, the hospital opened a COVID Clinic on 25 March 2020, which has since undertaken 20,555 screenings.

The hospital’s rapid response to COVID-19 illustrates the dedication of caregivers to provide high quality care to the community.

The hospital is a major employer in the region with 2938 employees.

As the services have increased at the hospital over the past five years, so has the number of employees, leading to a 39 per cent increase in the workforce since opening.

From the moment the hospital opened its doors on 24 November 2015, the 367-bed hospital has experienced a high demand on its services.

A number of innovative solutions and processes have been developed over the past five years to assist with meeting the health care needs of the community.

Great focus has been placed on providing high quality care and an environment that is comfortable and welcoming to all who visit. The hospital has built strong relationships with key local service providers and has firmly become integrated into the social fabric of the region.

Training

As part of the focus on providing high quality care to the community, a suite of education and training programs have been developed for caregivers and to support the next generation of clinicians.

Over the past five years training has been provided to:

  • 1293 junior doctors

  • 2480 nursing and midwifery students

  • 141 graduate nurses

  • 406 allied health students

Busiest days to date:

  • 285 Emergency Department presentations: (26/12/19)

  • 196 admissions: (16/12/19)

  • 96  procedures: (3/12/19)

  • 13 births: (1/9/16 and 21/2/20)

Nearly 200,000 patients were expected to be treated at the public hospital in its first full year of operations

It is a credit to all Midland caregivers how well we have managed the high demand on our services that we have experienced since opening.
