St John of God Midland Public Hospital Chief Executive Officer Michael Hogan said with mental health issues on the rise in the community, we saw Mental Health Week as a great opportunity to increase awareness about mental health and provide tips on how to stay mentally healthy.

“With about one in five Australians experiencing difficulties with their mental health at some stage of their lives, it is important people are aware of resources and services available to assist them,” he said.

“We have also placed a special focus on mental health during pregnancy and after the birth, as many women are unaware of the range of emotions they may experience during this period and where to get help.”

Maternity wellbeing

The Maternity Mental Health Fair will provide important information on the latest resources and support available to manage depression, anxiety and mental health conditions during pregnancy and impending motherhood.

Unfortunately, the incidence of mental health disorders can increase during pregnancy for some women, and knowing who and where to turn to can greatly assist expectant parents.

A range of health and community groups will be holding stalls to provide information on ways to stay physically and mentally healthy during pregnancy.

The event will also include belly painting, competitions and other fun activities.

The Western Australian Association of Mental Health is sponsoring the event.

The event will be held in the Antenatal Waiting Room, St John of God Midland Public Hospital, Second Floor, 1 Clayton Street, Midland.

Mental Health expo

A range of activities have been organised to build awareness of mental health and the importance of keeping well in the hospital’s main foyer from 9am to 1pm.

  • Live music by Spirit of the Street (11.30am)
